“With lies you may get ahead in the world – but you can never go back.” ~Russian proverb
Deception online can be mean, hurtful, and even highly dangerous/illegal. It ranges from using a different name for anonymity (which can be benign) to identity theft or worse.
I get very upset with the emails that get passed around the internet that have incorrect information. They get more and more sneaky, including lies about the email being validated on snopes.com. I see the emails passed around by older relatives, and trusting that they are true. That makes me so angry.
Before passing information on, please go to http://snopes.com and look it up.
There is a new rage on the web lately – “catfishing”. People make up profiles and then lead lonely people into fake relationships. This is so sad, and dangerous for emotionally vulnerable and/or mentally unstable people.

“New times call for new idioms. The Manti Te’o story appears more of a catfish story. The reference is to a certain kind of Internet dating hoax and comes from a 2010 documentary film and a new MTV reality series.”

“Common threads detected in psychopath texts
Michael Woodworth’s research at UBC Okanagan goes beyond deception. He also studies the personality disorder of psychopathy, looking at what secrets can be gleaned from the language used by psychopaths who have killed.
After interviewing dozens of psychopaths and non-psychopaths convicted of murder, Woodworth and colleagues used electronic linguistics analysis to automatically process the interview transcripts, paying attention to the appearance of certain words, parts of speech (verbs, adjectives, nouns), and semantics – for example, looking at how often certain topics came up.”
You know that there are people in real life that lie, steal, cheat and want to harm you. Just remember that you have to be alert online as well.
Social Media and Networking can combine all of the problems mentioned here, so be careful before spending money or making commitments to websites. Even a recommendation can be a lie, so be careful.
If you can work with someone or a website for free to test them out, do it!

Nothing is perfect! It is better to check than to keep passing around tips that will supposedly save your life that are not true.
Thanks for the comment, Lee

Internet can become dangerous in various ways, that’s why we need to be careful when using it. And even if we are not deceived, we need to educate others, too.
